Mother’s Day

Every year a special day is set aside to honor someone special.  Mother's Day is a Day in Honor of all True Mother's. Mother's Day itself has been around for centuries.  Beginning in Europe in the 1600's and known as Mothering Day.  It was a special day of rest for Mother's in which they would have the day off from their labors and attend Dinner with Family as the special Guest of Honor.  They were often presented with cakes and flowers and special visits from their beloved and distant children.

Mother's Day would eventually come to America with the early settlers.  The early Americans celebrated and honored Mother's, yet there was no official Holiday until Anna Jarvis petitioned the Superintendent of the Sunday School at the church to hold a special day in honor of her Mother Anna Reeves Jarvis who was a faithful Sunday School Teacher for over 20 years.  It was approved and they officially held Mother's Day on Sunday May 10, 1908.  Anna Jarvis arranged that all the Mother's receive White Carnations (her mother's favorite flower)  Today, White Carnations are used to honor deceased Mothers; while pink and red carnations are used to pay tribute to Mother's who are still alive.

Ms. Jarvis would eventually go on to petition Congress to make Mother's Day a National Holiday.  In 1912 West Virginia was the first state to officially recognize Mother's Day and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed into law that the 2nd Sunday of May officially be recognized as Mother's Day. What does this mean to us?  It means that we should do as the Bible commands us: "Give Honor where Honor is Due."--Romans 13:7 Consider the following passages: "A gracious woman retaineth honor..."-- Proverbs 11:16  Speaking of the Virtuous Woman it says: "Strength and Honor are her clothing..."  "Her Children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." -- Proverbs 31:25&28  And let us not forget the 4th Commandment of the Lord: "Honor thy Father and thy Mother." -- Exodus 20:12

On Sunday we were blessed to have the opportunity to honor our Mother's in Zion.  Words alone cannot express the gratitude that we have for True Mothers.  The children lavished their parents with gifts and sung special songs to the Mothers.  Sis. Elaine Rogers class honored the Mothers by holding a special Mother's Day Breakfast.  The Mother's enjoyed breakfast served to them at their tables by the children. The menu had on it: Pancakes, Eggs, Bacon, Fresh Fruit, and Orange Juice.  Also, each mother received a carnation thanks to Sis. Pitts.  Truly, it was a beautiful day in Honor of Mothers.  Click the Link below to see the Pictures.
